This page lists every figure transcribed from Table XV (“Language”) of 24 provincial and state volumes of the Census of India, 1931: 16,573 mother-tongue rows (Part I) and 23,808 subsidiary-language rows (Part II), for 1,057 districts, states, divisions and totals. Figures are shown as printed. Source opens the printed page on the Internet Archive, and Map opens the area on the district map. The Role column shows how the district map uses each Part I row. Leaf rows are the finest rows, which are added up. Total rows are group, section or population totals, used only as checks. Derived rows are not printed: they hold the part of a printed group total that the volume does not break down. docs/regional.md explains every rule. Marks: ? illegible in the scan · Σ calculated.
About Part II
Each volume laid out its subsidiary-language table in its own way. Some give the speakers of each mother tongue and then the numbers returning each second language. Others add the number returning two or three subsidiary languages, or give the figures in blocks. The Measure column records what each figure counts, as the volume labels it. These figures are not normalised and are not on the map. Compare them across volumes with care. Part II of the Central India Agency volume could not be read from the only scan.
